A media imbalance

The current ongoing worldwide epidemic COVID-19 has created a media frenzy. The general public is terrified. Articles and news reports are adding fuel to flame of panic ignited by the unknown. There are numerous articles referring to the negative effects of COVID-19 published every minute.

While it is important to inform the general public about updates, the number of negative messages are disproportionate to the number of positive. This imbalance is distressing and leads to public anxiety. Little is being done to support people with mental health issue like anxiety. People have never dealt with an issue this scale and don’t known how to respond.

It is the responsibility of publishers like The Spokesman-Review to de-escalate the public panic. Please be self-aware of articles published. Be sure to continue issuing news that is not COVID-19 related as a healthy distraction. Carefully consider the titles of articles in an effort to not create more panic.

Most importantly, it would be proactive to include resources and tips for managing anxiety and stress at the end of any COVID-19 related article. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list various coping mechanism and resources that can be helpful.
