Spokane’s speedway streets

A recent article in The Spokesman-Review focused on the increase in violent crime in Spokane (“Spokane cops: Violent crime is on the rise,” Oct. 12). Other recent articles have reported numerous maiming or fatal accidents of the speeding cars and motorcycles that on many evenings residents hear screaming through their streets in violent speedway contests.

Having a Ph.D. in linguistics and having published on the effect of sounds on human emotions, I can affirm that this strident noise, especially as it comes from vehicles that can harm, puts people on edge. And, it is part of and contributes to the culture that gives rise to the increased violence.

I believe that civic authorities would do well to address Spokane’s speedway streets as part of their efforts to reduce violent episodes in our city.
