A bad idea
While I’m certainly not surprised that the Spokesman-Review (10/25/20) editorial would come out in favor of Trump for president, I’m nevertheless extremely disappointed.
I know I’m not alone in wanting to think that in the face of so much opposition over this administration’s racist policies, that our local leaders have at least begun to move beyond the narrow self-interests of the business community. It is simply impossible to truthfully say that one is an anti-racist and vote for a “wretched human being” for president, but anti-racism is what this country sorely needs to become economically and socially secure.
Any reader of John Kenneth Galbraith, Howard Zinn or Sheldon Wolin knows beyond doubt that economic growth and public-sector investment in a high quality of life for all citizens go hand in hand. All one really has to do is look at the phenomenal success of the Scandinavian countries for proof.
It is therefore very disappointing to see that the owner of the Spokesman-Review is still so absorbed in the failed conventional wisdom (what Republicans now erroneously call common sense) of markets, competition, and so-called enlightened self-interest, that he is willing to ignore the needs of his fellow citizens in this time of extreme inequality. A better life for ALL is far from a “fantastical vision.” It was in fact the vision of the Founders, and it is very much within our grasp, if only we would elect leaders who seek to lead us in that direction.
