My life depends on it
I’ve been a Type 1 diabetic for 30+ years. Recently, I’ve developed an allergy to Humalog, the insulin my insurance company prefers, resulting in itchy welts and scarring at every insulin pump infusion site on my body. At my doctor’s appointment last month, my doctor agreed to change my prescription to Fiasp insulin, which is a different formulation of insulin that we’re hoping my body will tolerate better. It’s also a faster-working insulin, which will help with the management of my diabetes.
My health insurance doesn’t want me to change insulin. They tried to switch me to a different drug that would double my co-pay, and that is not the medication my doctor and I agree would be best for me. My insurance company wants me to pay $1,391.89 for one month’s supply of insulin. My doctor will have to continue to fight to try to get me the medication that he as a healthcare professional has determined would be best for me.
The reason I’m sharing this private information is to give a personal example of why I vote like my life depends on it, because it does.
This is why I will never vote for Rep. Bob McCaslin Jr., a fellow diabetic who voted against capping the cost of insulin, and why I am fighting to get Nurse Practitioner Lori Feagan elected as my next state representative. We need someone who understands healthcare, and cares enough to help us improve it.
