Tone-deaf endorsement

Congratulations to The Spokesman-Review for the most tone-deaf presidential endorsement in history.

“Donald Trump is a bully and a bigot,” began your Oct. 25 “endorsement,” which should have ended at that point with “therefore, all decent people should vote for Joe Biden.”

But no, instead we are regaled with a few more of Trump’s numerous shortcomings, including his cruel immigration policies, his tweets about unfounded conspiracy theories, his denial of climate change, his campaign to destroy the Affordable Care Act and his ongoing disastrous response to the pandemic.

Next, we read some dubious reasons to vote for our Bigot-in-Chief, including two policies he’s supported to help people of color. Those positives are overshadowed, however, by Trump’s continued refusal to disavow white supremacists.

Then, the endorsement reveals the genuine reason The Spokesman-Review (as in its publisher), endorses Trump: the massive tax cuts he imposed to pad the pockets of millionaires. Biden, it seems, lost the newspaper’s trust when he promised to raise taxes on Americans who make more than $400,000 a year.

Perhaps The Spokesman-Review’s publisher has forgotten Trump’s constant labeling of the media as “enemies of the people.” Almost every other newspaper in this country remembered those vile words and has endorsed Biden.

As should everyone, unless, of course, they have an affinity for bullies and bigots.
