It just makes sense

As a recently retired administrator of the Spokane Regional Health District I continue to support fluoridation of our community water systems. As the Spokane City Council plans to vote to fluoridate our water there are several facts that need to be understood, especially in light of erroneous claims made against water fluoridation. Scientific studies and data show the effectiveness, cost efficiency, safety and positive impacts on health equity of fluoridating our water.

Begin by knowing that nearly 75% of the US population (about 245 million people) are served by optimally fluoridated public water systems which is the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay. With more than 70 years of research and experience of use, the overwhelming weight of trustworthy scientific evidence indicates that fluoridation of community water supplies is safe.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has proclaimed community water fluoridation one of the ten greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. Community water fluoridation benefits everyone and is a powerful tool to address social justice and health equity.

Legally, water fluoridation has been tested in the courts of the United States and found to be a fitting method of furthering public health and welfare. No court of last resort has ever determined fluoridation to be unlawful.

Our elected leaders need to understand that medical, dental, academic and research organizations support water fluoridation nationally and internationally. A preponderance of evidence should provide sufficient support for a yes vote for water fluoridation in Spokane.
