Questions for Christians

Having come of age in the late 1960s and early ‘70s while the issues of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement had totally split our nation, I do not bemoan the present battles in our country as a sad, new development. They are merely the continuation of a sad, old development. Even a brief overview of American history displays the truth that if we are not united in fighting a foreign enemy, then we are busy fighting among ourselves. Sad truth.

There is one area of conflict, though, that makes no sense to me as a Christian. It involves racism, civil rights and abortion. Why do I see fellow Christians who are moved to fight for the civil rights of the unborn, and they are happy to look the other way when George Floyd, a Black man being murdered, is pleading for his life? Why are Christians fighting for the civil rights of those oppressed by racism, while they promote the violation of the God-given rights of the unborn?

To summarize, how have American Christians been so misled by poisonous political propaganda that they don’t see the fight to end racism and the fight to end the killing of unborn persons as equally noble battles that should enlist the support of all?

Perhaps Bob Dylan was right: “The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind … ”
