Immigration: Separating reality from the many myths

To look at it, you’d think that immigration is a recent phenomenon. But the fact is, immigration has always been as much of a problem as it’s been a reality.

Even as a problem, though, the very history of America shows how much of a benefit it’s been as well.

Yet debate over immigration continues to be a hot and heavy topic. And this is the case despite a recent Gallup poll that indicates the percentage of Americans who want more immigration is higher than those who don’t want it (34 to 28 percent) and that a whopping majority of Americans “want legal status for immigrants brought to the US illegally as children” (74 percent).

Why is this? Well, Humanities Washington is sponsoring a live-stream event today at 6 that might provide some answers. Titled “The Borders of Truth: Misinformation in the Immigration Debate,” it features Professor Sophia Jordán Wallace , an associate professor of political science at the University of Washington.

Wallace will, Humanities Washington promises, “explore how misinformation, myths, and media stereotypes have hobbled our ability to talk meaningfully about immigration, and made immigration reform in Congress more difficult.”

Sounds fascinating. Click here to register.
