It’s August already, and most of the summer blockbusters have already opened. But each week brings new movie offerings, minor though they might be, and this coming week is no different.
“I’ve already written about “Emily the Criminal,” the film starring Aubrey Plaza, which opens regionally on Friday (including at the Magic Lantern Theatre). But a couple of others are slated to open at area mainstream theaters as well.
“Mack & Rita” : Adaptating the ever-popular “Freaky Friday” theme, a 30-year-old woman (Elizabeth Lail) wakes up one morning to find herself 40 years older (played by Diane Keaton).
No reviews available.
“Fall” : Following a personal loss, a young woman (Grace Caroline Currey) agrees to join her friend (Virginia Gardner) in an attempt to climb a 2,000-foot radio tower.
No reviews available.
“Summering” : On the eve of their entering middle school, four young girls take a long look at their lives – what they’ve been and what they might become.
Wendy Ide of Screen International described the film as “A coming of age drama which brings a female-led freshness to some undeniably dark elements, and wears its thematic similarities to ‘Stand By Me’ lightly.”
“Laal Singh Chaddha” : “Forrest Gump” gets an Indian remake (in Hindi with English subtitles).
IndieWire reviewer Proma Khosla calls the film “A faithful adaptation that still finds the space to lean into specific cultural influences, deep history, and lovely visuals.”
I’ll update with reviews as they come online.
