Coming Friday: This lion doesn’t sleep at night

Summer is slowly dwindling … though to be honest we should have at least another full month of warm weather. With luck a month and a half.

I’m not sure we can say the same for  the summer movie season. Fandango is projecting that three films will be opening on Friday, and not a single one of them is particularly a chart-buster.

Entertaining enough to get you into an air-conditioned theater? Well, the standard there is fairly low, right?

“Beast” : Idris Elba stars as a single father of two teenage girls who, while accompanying them on a photo safari in Africa, is confronted by an immense, killer lion. His mane problem is … OK, bad joke.

No serious critics have yet to chime in. But someone named Casey Chong , author of Casey’s Movie Mania, wrote, “Excluding the end credits, ‘Beast’ only runs 90 minutes long, which is lean and compact enough for this type of movie.”

“Delia’s Gone” : A guy with mental health issues is convicted of killing his sister, serves a term in prison and is released. But then the mystery begins: Did he really commit the crime? And if not, who did?

No advance reviews available.

“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” : I took this description directly from Rotten Tomatoes: “The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals, who carry on its spirit, have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two Androids call themselves ‘Super Heroes.’ They start attacking Piccolo and Gohan… What is the New Red Ribbon Army’s objective? In the face of approaching danger, it is time to awaken, Super Hero!”

Simon Abrams of TheWrap wrote, “Fans of both the ‘Dragon Ball’ and ‘Dragon Ball Z’ anime will probably be the ideal audience, but open-minded viewers might also enjoy ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,’ given its playful dialogue and dynamic fight scenes.”

I’ll update as the week progresses.
