One of the most critically acclaimed novels of the 1990s was David Guterson’s “Snow Falling on Cedars.” Not only did the book win the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, it was made into a 1999 film starring Ethan Hawke .
Guterson, who lives on Bainbridge Island, has written several other novels as well, including 1999’s “East of the Mountains.” His latest is titled “The Final Case,” which is described as “a moving father-son story that is also a taut courtroom drama and a bold examination of privilege, power, and how to live a meaningful life.”
Set in a small town outside of Seattle, the novel follows the story of an attorney in his 80s who takes on the case of a woman accused of murdering her foster daughter.
Writing in the New York Times, Scott Turow – a novelist in his own right – wrote this: “Guterson is the kind of writer about whom people used to say, when there were such things, ‘I’d read him, even if he wrote the phone book.’ Every sentence has a graceful weight and meter and is illumined by a subtle intelligence that makes his descriptions arresting but never showy.”
The good news for local book fans is that Auntie’s Bookstore will hold a Zoom interview with Guterson at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Click here to register.
It might be a good idea to drop by the store and pick up a copy, too. Supporting good writing – not to mention good bookstores – is always a good thing.
