It’s not often that Spokane sees a red-carpet movie opening. Yet that’s exactly what will happen at the Magic Lantern Theatre on Friday.

Yakima Valley native J. Rick Castañeda will show his film “All Sorts” at 7 p.m. and be available following the screening to answer questions.

“All Sorts” revolves around a quirky plot: Diego (played by Eli Vargas) is a data-entry clerk who, along with a folder filer named June (played by Geena Park), gets involved in “the world of championship folder filing.”

Yeah, competitive folder filing.

Castañeda based his film on his own work experiences from his first years after moving to Los Angeles, where he earned a degree in creative writing (with a minor in film) from the University of Southern California.

Those experiences, he said in a press release, led to his writing the script for “All Sorts” and the “surreal world of Data-Mart and the eclectic people who live there.”

“I worked a lot of mundane office jobs,” he said. “I found lots of time to imagine magical escape routes out of the gray cubicles where I was trapped every day.”

Tickets are $11 and can be purchased through the Magic Lantern website.
