Halloween preview: ‘Don’t Look at the Demon’

OK, it’s October, something I already mentioned below. But just because Halloween is a few weeks away, that doesn’t mean that we’re missing out on horror movies.

In fact, aside from the obligatory “Halloween” film re-releases, another kind of demon-haunts-some-comically-stupid-humans film is scheduled to open on Friday.

The title: “Don’t Look at the Demon,” which seems natural enough.

The plot: The producers of one of those television paranormal investigation shows head to Malaysia to check out rumors of a haunted house. What they find there is worse that their worst nightmares.

Directed and co-written by Brando Lee, and starring Fiona Dourif – the daughter of actor Brad Dourif – the film hasn’t been reviewed by any major critics. But with a bit of searching I found this single online review by a guy named M.L. Miller :

“ ‘Don’t Look at the Demon’ is better produced and acted than your usual exorcism yarn,” Miller wrote. “Fiona Dourif elevates the material to a new level and the rest of the cast are capable actors as well.”

While not as “effective in conveying the power of demons” as “The Medium,” he added, Miller concluded, “It is a decent watch. Not over the top great, but better than most in this subgenre.”

Not exactly a sterling recommendation. But at least while reviewing something titled “Don’t Look at the Demon,” he didn’t suggest that we not look at this movie.
