Lantern focus: All about Black motherhood

As a means of observing Black Maternal Health Week , the Magic Lantern Theatre on Friday will offer a special program of four documentary feature films.

The lineup:

“Bringing Midwifery Back to Black Mothers” : A 90-minute film focusing on activists in southern states working to make midwife services more available to Black mothers.

“Aftershock” : A two-hour feature that details the experiences of two families that suffered the loss of young mother after their giving birth.

“Black Motherhood Through the Lens” : Four Black woman document their various struggles navigating America’s “reproductive and maternal healthcare system from conception to postpartum.” Three hours.

“Birthing Justice” : A two-hour study that keys on Black women as they progress through the pregnancy process and the attendant challenges. Among those challenges are “genetic predispositions, chronic stress, racial bias, culturally ignorant care and barriers to adequate healthcare.”

The two-house theater will also continue screening “The Quiet Girl,” “Living,” “The Lost King” and “Paint.”
