More Friday openings: Sex, spies and ‘Sisu’

I’ve already written about two of the films that are scheduled to open on Friday. But there are a few others.

One is the 40th-anniversary re-release of Richard Marquand’s “Return of the Jedi,” or as it is also known “Star Wars: Episode VI.”

More recent releases include:

“Showing Up” : Michelle Williams stars as a sculptor trying to prepare for a coming show while dealing with family, friends and an inattentive landlord. Directed and co-written by Kelly Reichardt and costarring Hong Chau.

Sheila O’Malley of RogerEbert.com wrote, “There’s something a little too neat about the structure of ‘Showing Up’ … but the piercing specificity of Reichardt’s vision, and her insights into the dynamics of an art scene like the one in Portland, are spot on.”

“Sisu” : When confronted by Nazi soldiers, a Finnish veteran intent on taking the gold he has prospected to market turns out to be far more of a problem than the Nazis though possible.

Dennis Harvey of Variety wrote, “A splashy popcorn action piece unconcerned with credibility, pushing well-worn ideas to outlandish, and outrageously entertaining, ends.”

“Polite Society” : A Pakistani-English woman attempts to foil her sister’s plans to get married. In English and Urdu.

Aparita Bhandari of the Globe and Mail wrote, “ ‘Polite Society’ is a welcome addition to the canon of works featuring the lives of contemporary South Asian diaspora, with its distinct British humour.”

“The End of Sex” : With the kids away, a husband and wife try to enliven their sex life.

Louisa Moore of Screen Zealots wrote, “With humor aimed at married couples with kids, the writing is honest but predictable, and not always relatable.”

“Agent” : The spy who is sent to investigate a terrorist organization has his own secret past. In Telugu with English subtitles. No reviews available.
