In a movie landscape filled with Oscar nominees, a few new films exploring various themes will attempt to attract audiences on Friday.
Those themes range from elderly women movie stars becoming fans of NFL star quarterback Tom Brady to a new M. Night Shyamalan trek into horror.
Among the coming week’s openings:
“80 for Brady” : Four woman – played by Rita Moreno (90), Sally Field (76), Jane Fonda (85) and Lily Tomlin (83) – pool their resources and attempt to get tickets to the Super Bowl so that they can meet the man many refer to as the GOAT.
Sheri Linden of the Hollywood Reporter wrote, “ ’80 for Brady’ isn’t a for-the-ages score-setter, but it makes the goal when it counts.”
“Knock at the Cabin” : Happy in their forest-cabin getaway, a family sees their holiday threatened by a quartet of people who say they are on a mission to avert the apocalypse. Dave Bautista stars as the quartet’s scary leader.
No advance reviews available. Seldom a good sign.
“The Amazing Maurice” : Co-directors Toby Genkel and Florian Westermann adapt Terry Pratchett ’s children’s novel about a sentient cat and a horde of talking rats who encounter a situation that conflicts with their own money-making scheme.
Guy Lodge of Variety wrote, “It’s genuinely eccentric enough – with its sly talking cat, intrepid band of gold-hearted rats and chronic aversion to keeping the fourth wall intact – to come off as charming rather than smarmy.”
I’ll update as the week progresses.
