No movie mercy even for a beloved kids’ classic

Seems like nothing is sacred anymore. Not even children’s classics such as Winnie-the-Pooh.

Of course, the great Dorothy Parker wouldn’t care. She was certainly no fan. Her New Yorker review of A.A. Milne’s book “The House at Pooh Corner” was one of the most biting reviews of any book, much less a children’s book, ever written.

Not that Parker would necessarily like the film “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.” But she might prefer it to Milne’s writing.

Written and directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield , “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” explores what happens to Pooh and buddy Piglet when Christopher Robin abandons them to attend university.

Let’s just say they want something with a bit more protein in it than bee droppings.

The film screened one night only Wednesday at three area theaters: Regal Cinemas at NorthTown Mall and Coeur d’Alene’s Riverstone Stadium, and at AMC River Park Square. If you missed it, look for a VOD release sometime soon.

Or not. Brian Orndorf, writing for Blu-ray.com, had this to say: “ ‘Blood and Honey’ isn’t the first to make a mess of a loved literary icon and it won’t be the last (a sequel is already in the works), but it certainly wouldn’t kill Frake-Waterfield to put some genuine effort into his features, giving the curious something more to enjoy than simplistic exploitation sold with a lunch money budget.”

Not for the first time, one mourns the passing of a Dorothy Parker.
