We’re heading into the third week of this new year facing a blend of new and old movies – at least old in 2022 terms.
At least three of Friday’s scheduled openings – “Broker,” “The Devil Conspiracy” and “Saint Omer” – all date from last year, while the “House Party” remake and thriller “Plane” are new.
The scheduled lineup, as of today, is as follows:
“Broker” : I wrote about this film from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Koreeda on Tuesday.
“House Party” : Though Reginald Hudlin, writer-director of the 1990 film of the same title , isn’t credited, this Calmatic-directed effort is a remake of that earlier comedy about a high-school student deciding to hold a party while his parents are away. The new version, which shifts things to LeBron James’ house, stars Jacob Latimore and Tosin Cole as the rebooted equivalents of Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin.
No reviews available.
“The Devil Conspiracy” : When an artificial-intelligence company announces that they can clone people with just a few strands of DNA, a satanic group steals the Shroud of Turin – causing the Archangel Michael to descend to Earth in an attempt to foil the group’s plan to resurrect Jesus for Satan’s amusement.
No reviews available.
“Plane” : Gerard Butle r stars as an airline pilot who, having conducted an emergency landing on a war-torn island, teams up with an accused murderer (Mike Colter) to save his passengers.
No reviews available.
“Saint Omer” : A novelist (Kayije Kagame) attends the trial of a woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter and has her attitudes challenged regarding notions of guilt, innocence and the nature of justice.
Marya E. Gates of RogerEbert.com wrote, “Documentarian Alice Diop ’s narrative debut ‘Saint Omer’ is a visually arresting courtroom set drama.”
I’ll update as the week progresses.
