The Slice

You can’t really scrutinize small talk

I was on my way out of the North Side place where I get my hair cut this morning when I crossed paths with a woman who had the appointment after mine.

"Slippery out there," I said.

"Yes," she said. "Winter's not over."

She could have responded to my remark by saying, "Well, duh. Don't you think I noticed?"

And I could have greeted her observation about winter not being over by saying, "Good grief, woman. It's only mid-January."

But instead we just smiled at one another and went on our way.
