The Slice: That angel needs to give softer kisses

Spokane grade-school teacher Betsy Weigle was in a doctor’s waiting room when she found herself listening to two sisters, one about 4 and the other about 7.

The younger girl was admiring the birthmark on her big sister’s ankle.

And the older girl explained that the mark was the sign of an angel’s kiss.

Then the younger girl pointed to her own knee and happily noted her angel kiss.

“The older sister was quick to point out (as big sisters usually do), ‘That’s not an angel kiss, that’s a bruise!’

“Poor little kid looked so disappointed.”

Yeah. Maybe an angel kicked her.

“Hey, kids: If you plan to ask for a candy bar in the checkout aisle, don’t whine and fuss the whole time Mom or Dad are shopping.

“Melissa Sisich wonders: “How many of your contributors have you met, and do we look like you thought we would?”

1. Quite a few. Almost without exception, it is a pleasant experience.

2. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But I’ve discovered that Slice readers tend to have prepossessing smiles.

“Family motto: “What now?” — Mary Rowley

“One thing leads to another.” — Bobbee Hepworth

“We can always serve as a bad example.” — Dennis Foster

“Slice answer (cats obsessed with biting a certain object): Cathy Rubow’s sister, Mary, had knit a pink afghan that her cat, Booger, mauled repeatedly.

“It was never used by anyone other than Booger,” wrote Rubow.

“What happened after years and years to change your opinion of someone: The reader leaving this answer on my phone didn’t share his name. But I want to pass it along it because I’ve had the exact same experience.

“I saw him with his children.”

“Computerspeak: A friend’s young daughter informed her mom of her plan to “delete” some Lincoln Logs from an existing toy structure so that she could launch a new construction project.

“Warm-up questions: Can you read the handwriting of others in your family? Was Eliot right about April? Are all the retired big-city cops who move to this area white? Do good looking people get asked the time of day a lot? What Spokane area restaurant could you imagine being right at home in a much larger city? Have you ever picked up your cat and stepped on the scale to weigh the pet and, after subtracting your own weight, calculated that the feline must weigh 45 pounds?

“Today’s Slice question: What’s a good high school graduation present? (Or we can just skip this, Leigh, and you can call and say what you want.)
