Me gusta ver ‘Perro come perro’
Since last spring, when I agreed to join the team of programmers for the Spokane International Film Festival , I’ve tried to find a Colombian film to bring to Spokane. I spent a month in Colombia during the summer, and I wanted to return with a bit of the experience, even if just in movies. Trouble is, there aren’t that many Colombian films. Not good ones, anyway.
The one that I did want to bring, the one that everybody I met in Colombia suggested to me, was titled “Perro come perro” (or “Dog Eat Dog”). Filmed in and around Cali, Colombia, “Perro come perro” seemed perfect. Here is how Robert Koehler of Daily Variety described it in traditional Variety speak: ” Testosterone is thick as paste in ‘Dog Eat Dog,’ a slice of slick trash about bad guys pitched against each other, from Colombian co-writer-director and musicvideo vet Carlos Moreno. Repping a glum trend in Latin America for shock-comic crime yarns, the pic resembles a Tony Scott movie without any of his intelligence and cinematic invention. Odd Sundance pick isn’t a fest film item at all, and should knock ‘em dead with action auds in a range of territories.”
Trouble is, for SpIFF, that the 2007 film was released this week on DVD . Which means by the time the festival starts on Jan. 28 (and runs through Feb. 7), anyone who will have wanted to see the movie will have done so. I’m gonna go out today and see if I can find a copy.
