Golden Globes: Not exactly the Oscars

In recent years, i’ve come to love watching the Golden Globes. For one thing, it’s been a far more entertaining show that, say, the Oscars. Everyone sits around in groups, at tables, drinking and looking as if they’re having a grand old time.

For another, no one seems to take it all that seriously. I remember when Colin Farrell (“In Bruges”), a winner last year for one of the (seemingly multiple) acting awards, talked about the “Insane hour” that he spends every year with the “Hollywood Foreign Pressers.” Knowing nods and giggles all around.

And why should we take it seriously? The Hollywood Foreign Press is a group of 80-some journalists from foreign publications, but not - interestingly enough - from some of the most prestigious papers or magazines (Le Monde, for example, or the Times of London).

So while not a joke, exactly, the Globes have more in common with the People’s Choice Awards than with anything remotely critical.

Sure does make for a fun watch, though. As long as the drinks are flowing.
