Economic engine squeaking

The Spokesman-Review

So now the Canadians are upset because we don’t want our stimulus funds to go to the Canadian businesses.

The whole economy thing reminds me of a science fiction story I read many years ago. The author theorized a society where the people had to consume a quota of products. In order to have a job and income, people were required to consume enormous amounts of things as well as work for a living. All this took up all their spare time, except, of course, eating and sleeping.

The only people who could afford to live a simple life and take time to smell the roses were the very rich. (The rich we always have with us.)

We are all mere cogs in a giant consumption engine, and we’re running out of oil to grease the wheels. Stop the world – how do we get off?
