Driving around Kosovo, Part I
The Serbian Orthodox monk Peter explains the history of the Visoki Decani Monastery to a couple of American visitors, Air Force Col. Jim Playford and Gonzaga University law professor Mary Pat Treuthart.
Just outside Decani, in western Kosovo, sits the Visoki Decani Monastery, one of the few Serbian Orthodox churches remaining in Albanian-dominated Kosovo and one of the oldest still in existence anywhere. The structure, which was completed in 1335, is protected by Italian KFOR troops.
In Istog, as in most other Kosovar towns, you’ll find a picturesque mosque signifying the area’s predominantly Muslim faith.
The western Kosovo city of Istog is set up against the Accursed Mountains, which separate Kosovo from Montenegro.
In good weather, when the sun is able to cut through the polluted atmosphere, Pristina - Kosovo’s largest city - boasts brilliant sunsets.
