R.I.P. Chief Martin Brody
That big shark called death finally got Chief Brody. That’s a movie fan’s way of saying that Roy Scheider is dead. The 75-year-old actor died on Sunday in Little Rock, Ark., where he had been undergoing treatment for cancer of the bone marrow.
While Scheider received two Oscar nominations during his long career, he was never a leading-man type – unless, of course, you include his best-known role as Amity’s police chief in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film “Jaws” and as the self-destructive choreographer in Bob Fosse’s 1979 musical “All That Jazz.”
Beginning with that ground-breaking film, I’ve drawn up a list of what I consider to be Scheider’s top 10 films.
1, “Jaws.”
2, “Marathon Man.”
3, “The French Connection.”
4, “All That Jazz.”
5. “Blue Thunder.”
6. “2010.”
7. “Sorcerer.”
8. “Romeo Is Bleeding.”
9. “The Russia House.”
10. “The Myth of Fingerprints.”
Below: This YouTube film tells the story of “Jaws” in just three minutes.
