“Sky Captain” just doesn’t, uh, sing

All it takes is a film such as “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” to remind us just how smart, and talented, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are. Not just visually, mind you, but also thematically. “Sky Captain” looks brilliant, all muted colors and digitally produced images that, again, propel animation into the 21st century without losing the personal feel of actual actors the way “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within” does. And the acting is just what it needs to be, with Gwyneth Paltrow as the Lois Lane of the story and Jude Law as the titular hero that George Reeves might once have played. But their characterizations are, uh, electron thin, and the story isn’t a whole lot more exciting, or surprising, than “Gene Autry and the Phantom Empire.” Compare Law’s character to Indiana Jones or Han Solo or even Ian Malcolm . I’ll give him this much: He is more charismatic than the Singing Cowboy .
