Teaching Radiohead: It’s a just cause
I’m getting ready to show some music videos to a Gonzaga University class that I teach. And what have I chosen? One of the most fascinating collections of music videos ever made: Radiohead ’s “Seven Television Commercials.” A former boyfriend of my daughter turned me on to it several years ago, and I’ve watched it a half dozen times since then. My favorite of all the films – which is what each of these music videos is – is “Just.” Reminiscent of something Rod Serling might write, “Just” is metaphysical rock ’n’ roll, buoyed by Johnny Greenwood’s guitar and Thom Yorke’s wailing vocals. And, no, I don’t know what the man says to the crowd at the video’s end. Maybe it has something to do with the coming presidential election .
