Wax on, wax off for Smith son

Looks like there’s going to be a new generation of “The Karate Kid.” The series that made a star out of Ralph Macchio and helped the early career of two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank is reportedly in production as a Jerry Weintraub film starring Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith .

I saw the original “Karate Kid,” which was directed by “Rocky” Oscar-winner John G. Avildsen , during the summer of 1984 at the old two-screen River Park Square Cinemas on what used to be North Post St.

As I recall, the theater was so packed that I had to sit in the third row, which gave me a skewed view of the screen. So much so, in fact, that Macchio’s crane stance looked like something by F.W. Murnau .

Yet I still remember loving the film.
