Abortion not funded

The Spokesman-Review

I would like to correct a point made by Paul Swanson in a letter. He stated that this new health care bill will have government funding of abortions. That is not true. The Hyde Amendment strictly prohibits any federal funds for abortions, and thanks to the Nelson Amendment, now a woman will have to write out two separate checks, with her own money, if she wants a policy with abortion coverage.

There is no federal funding of abortions. But if he had really been paying attention, he would know that. This bill is far from perfect and in my opinion doesn’t go nearly far enough. But it is a start. And I’m not a bit surprised at Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ vote. Why should we have expected anything different?
