Oh, Noah, what was you thinking?
I haven’t posted anything in a few days. But I’ve had good reason, mainly that I’ve hated - loathed - two of the last three films that I’ve seen.
We went over all three this morning as we taped this week’s edition of “Movies 101” for Spokane Public Radio (listen to us Friday at 6:30 p.m. on 91.1 FM, Saturday at 3 p.m. on 91.9 FM).
The two I hated: “Greenberg” and “Breaking Upwards.” The one I found at least interesting, even if it isn’t exactly something everyone is bound to embrace? Werner Herzog’s “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done.”
“Greenberg” is the latest film by Noah Baumbach, and it features one of the most unlikeable characters (played by Ben Stiller) ever dreamed up. Stiller’s Roger Greenberg is a self-absorbed jerk who treats his friends like crap, rails against everyone and everyting and yet still attracts people to him (like Greta Gerwig’s character, Florence). I had to force myself to stay in the theater and, when the film was over, wanted to gouge my eyes out with 12-inch-long razor-sharp needles.
“Breaking Upwards” is a New York-produced film about a couple of 20-something Brooklynites who, tired of having sex with each other, decide to take a break from their relationship. Yet instead of just not seeing each other, they decide to take days off … leaving the option of seeing other people unspoken. And, for a long time, unaddressed. My reaction after listening to these whiny junior adults trying to find some sort of fulfillment: Get a job. You may not find happiness, but at least you’ll be able to move out from mommy and daddy’s.
Herzog’s movie is the weirdest of the three, capturing as it does the based-on-a-true-story incident of a guy (Michael Shannon) who gets cast in a stage production of “Electra” and who, ultimately, kills his mother (Grace Zabriskie). Told in an unfolding chronological manner, broken by various weird flashbacks, “My Son, My Son” features the bizarre Shannon’s monologues, hot-pantsed Chloe Sevigny, mariachis, flamingoes, scenes that grind to a halt, Zabriskie’s goggle-eyed reactions, SWAT teams, Udo Kier and even a midget. That last one comes as no surprise, since David Lynch executive-produced. Straaannnggge … but never boring.
That’s how my weekend went. How was yours?
