Last chance to see ‘A Prophet’

I don’t usually make flat statements. I typically try to let others have differering points of view, figuring that I might be able to learn something if I just shut up and listen.

That said … if you claim to love independent/foreign/alternative cinema, and you don’t go to see “A Prophet” before it leaves Spokane tomorrow night, then you have no right to complain about decent film never coming to Spokane.

Yes, the movie - a film that I have called the first great film to play Spokane in 2010 - is leaving AMC after a one-week stay. Say again, a one-week stay.

Look, I can’t say that I blame anyone for skipping a near-three-hour movie in French. Especially a movie that takes place almost exclusively in prison and boasts some of the most brutal sequences in recent memory. Still, Jacques Audiard’s film is as close to a masterpiece as I’ve seen since “There Will Be Blood.”

Yeah, it’s that good.

Our only hope now? Maybe the Magic Lantern will pick it up.

Will Joe Davis save us once again? I hope so, even if what he’s saving us from is ourselves.
