Ice skating is cool. Free concerts are awesome.

Tricia Jo Webster

In case you haven’t heard, the 2010 US Figure Skating Championships are in town. Yeah, it’s kind of a big deal. Spokane’s rallying behind the event to make this one of the coolest things to hit town since, oh, I don’t know … Expo ‘74.

Skaters take to the ice every day between now and January 24, plus there are plenty of awesome events taking place outside the rink. FANFEST celebrates the skaters and their fans with athlete interviews, autograph sessions, food, drink, live entertainment and fireworks. These fan events are FREE and open to everyone, so even if you’re not real big on the Championship’s amazing athletic prowess and ubiquitous sequins, you’re invited to visit RiverPark Square to take part in the fun.

Weekend nights are marked with free concerts. American Idol finalist Jason Castro (love those eyes) kicks off the concert series tonight at 6, after a victory ceremony for the Championship Pairs. Fireworks will light up the sky after the concert.

Tomorrow night (Jan. 17) Ingrid Michealson (love that voice) will be the featured artist.

And next Saturday (Jan. 23) Parachute (love these guys) will be up on stage.

Like I said … it’s kind of a big deal. And so very cool. Yay, Spokane!
