A Spokane beautification project

Tricia Jo Webster

One of the things I treasure most about Spokane is the giving spirit of our community. We volunteer. We rally around the underdog. We give our “have” to the have-nots. And we’re all better because of it.

This morning I stumbled upon something I think we can all appreciate – Project Beauty Share .

Who hasn’t come home with a “just right” blush that we quickly realize, upon application to our cheekbone region, is “so wrong”? Or eye shadow that makes us look like we’ve just stepped out of Studio 54? Or conditioner that makes our baby-fine hair look like we’ve just dipped our head in baby oil?

What do you do with that stuff? I tend to let it collect in a basket on the bathroom shelf until it reaches maximum capacity. Then I transfer the basket to the linen closet and start all over, because I’m certain my coloring will magically change sometime in the distant future and that nail polish will suddenly work for me. Also, I hate throwing perfectly good stuff in the trash.

Apparently I’m not alone. So far, Project Beauty Share has collected more than 100 boxes of cosmetic cast-offs. They sterilize the stuff that’s been used, sort it all and then partner with local agencies to pass the products along to women in our community who can’t afford these spirit-lifting beauty products.

So simple: Clean out your beauty product drawers or baskets or cupboards and clear your life of a little clutter. Then pass on that stuff that no longer works for you to women in our community who could use a little beauty in their lives.
