Another Earth’: Not exactly easy to grok

What with my daugher and her two children visiting, it’s been hard to get out to see a movie. But as they are on East Coast time, we’ve been able to go out late. Last night we took in “Another Earth,” the Sundance independent feature that’s playing at the AMC.

Uh, not sure it was worth the effort. The film looks great, the intentionally washed-out cinematography working with the film’s inherent strange theme: A young woman, after spending four years in prison for drunk-driving manslaughter, enters a relationship with the man whose family she had killed. But … he doesn’t know who she is. And then there’s the other Earth, a mirror image of our Earth, that shows up in the night sky, a place that the young woman hopes to win a free trip to.

Trouble is: Some parts of the story just don’t make sense. And the there’s that ending … which I won’t reveal.

So, OK, I’m open to explanations, if anyone has one.
