Tastes like a second chance.
For the record, I did pack my lunch today. But then I got an email that the New Leaf Bakery had cooked up some of their simply delicious pizzas, and I put my lunch back in the refrigerator. Look at this … fresh peppers and olives and two kinds of tomatoes (which I picked off because I don’t do tomatoes) and rosemary and basil and feta and capers and mushrooms and more cheese.
If you ever see the New Leaf table at a Farmer’s Market (I know they do the Perry Street) do yourself a favor and buy something. Their breads are amazing — so far my fave is the Garlic Parmesan. And their cookies? How do I choose one just one? I don’t! But I can tell you that they sometimes bake what they call a “Potato Chip Cookie” and it is a thing of beauty. Salty and sweet in the same soft and crunchy bite. OK, so maybe I can choose just one. But there’s no way I’m going to stop after eating just one.
If you’re not familiar with the New Leaf Bakery, click here . The program, part of Transitions family of services, offers low-income women education, hands-on work experience and support to build their skill sets, their confidence and their opportunities. I’ve been lucky enough to meet many of the ladies who work through this program, and many of the women who have dedicated their lives to raising these women up — and I have to tell you, nothing tastes better than hope. Except, maybe, hope dipped in chocolate.
The New Leaf Bakery also operates a cafe at 5th and Division, inside Catholic Charities, and they do a mighty fine job catering private events, too. (I know. I’ve tasted it.)
