Former Scottie reaches milestone

Dave Trimmer

Now that most of them are seniors, I’ve been tracking down the area’s Class of 2007 in women’s basketball, particularly focusing on the Division I signees. The latest is Gonzaga Prep’s Tara Cronin , the subject to Wednesday’s notebook now a senior at Portland (despite the oops headline in the paper today).

For one who slipped through the cracks, Jessica Miller of Freeman (above in Corban College photo) … keep reading.

With Angie Bjorklund (U-Hi) at Tennessee, Cronin, Kelli Valentine (Mead) and Lexi Bishop (Shadle Park) at Portland State, Lyndi Seidensticker (Lewis and Clark) at Montana State and Jenna Galloway (Ferris) at Northern Arizona, it’s hard to keep up with the Class of 2007.

And that’s just the seniors. Katelan Redmon (Lewis and Clark) is a junior at Gonzaga because she had to sit out a year after transferring from WAshington. Misty Atkinson (Clarkston) had her career cut short at Montana because of injuries and if she wants, Nikki Nelson (Chewelah) can play two more years at New Mexico provided she comes back next year from her latest knee injury.

Then there’s another senior, Heidi Heintz (Central Valley) at UC-Davis, who graduated in ‘06 but lost a year transferring from San Francisco.

Then there are the players that went to smaller schools, such as Dara Zack (U-Hi) and Roni Jo Mielke (Sprague-Harrington), who I checked in with earlier because they played at EWU. And there are more, like Alyssa Green (Mead) a junior at Carroll College who redshirted her first year.

I just can’t keep up with them. Just to prove my point, the 2007 Greater Spokane All-League list included: MVP Bjorlund, Cronin, Bishop, Redmon and Zack on the first team; Galloway, Seidensticker and Valentine on the second team and Green on the third team. Then there was Brittany Kennedy (LC) on the first team as a junior, who is sitting out this year after transferring from Oregon State to Florida Gulf Coast; Lexie Pettersen (Shadle Park) a junior on the second team who is playing at Washington State.

Mix in a little hockey action and I’m over-whelmed trying to track all this talent. But thanks to alert readers, I can update you on others.

On Saturday Jessica Miller, a senior from Freeman, scored a career high 25 points and in the process surpassed 1,000 points for her career at Corban, a NAIA Christian school in Salem, Ore. Miller is averaging 12 points and 7 rebounds, third and tied for first, for the 14-9 Warriors, who have a rich history of success. She also leads theteam in assists and is second in steals. Coming into this season her career average was 8.4 points and 4.5 rebounds.
