Job bleed no help at home

New Year’s parties are over; citizens can refocus on River City and new events. We worry about debt, so we see debates on “cuts,” at every level and no easy choices. Big money interests frame the questions and push their options and solutions.

I am a populist on the issues of basic services and like a safety net for the poor; trim fat but save the net. I say we all know that private-sector services arrive with profit motives. So, what benefit will occur if we push our limited dollars into the for-profit arena? Does the “common good” suffer?

Leadership at every level must ensure that routine basic services arrive here fairly and smarter. I say watch Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ support of offshoring firms with some tax relief – her action will be great for big corporations but hurt local citizens.

I read data last week stressing that 70 percent of Spokane’s large job losses are due to offshoring.
