No buzz on ‘Super 8’? Oh, please!
The Wall Street Journal, it seems, is reporting that J.J. Abrams’ new sci-fi thriller, “Super 8,” isn’t creating much of a social-media buzz. Really? If that truly is the case, I give up trying to figure out what movie today’s movie audiences want.
More dismemberment (see the “Hostel” series) and torture (the “Saw” series)? More witches and warlocks (see the “Harry Potter” series)? More vampires (see the “Unverworld” series)? More vampire and werewolves (see the “Twilight” series)? Notice that all these are sets of films, another sign that Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.
Let me say this: “Super 8” is the best kiddie sci-fi adventure since “The Goonies.” It has touches of “E.T.,” which isn’t surprising since it’s coproduced by Abrams and Steven Spielberg. As such, it has a fair amount of pre-teen comedy, a lot of of parent-child angst and more heart than a dozen Michael Bay movies.
No social-media buzz? Considering what sells these days , maybe that’s a good thing.
