Note to Self: Step Up or Shut Up

I can talk myself out of anything. I can convince myself that the Price is Right is more important than my morning run. I can tell myself that my body needs cake more than it needs exercise. And I can whine like a 2-year-old when my fat pants won’t zip up.

Or I can remind myself that I’m not getting any younger and if I want to get healthy and stay healthy, I have to set goals and stick to them … no matter how good an afternoon on the sofa with a beer and a cupcake might sound.

I’ve been working on getting serious for a few months now. But I need daily reminders that what I get out of it is equal to what I put into it.

I have a feeling some of you might know what I’m talking about. Too tired? Too busy? Too lazy? I suggest you set a goal. And get there one step at a time …

There are roughly 49 days left until May 1.

49 days before a starting gun signals the beginning of the 35th annual running of Bloomsday .

In other words, there are 49 days to stop making excuses.

49 days to start making a difference in your life.

Get off the couch.

Put down the potato chips (at least while you’re exercising … trust me, it’s awfully hard to get a healthy lungful of air when your mouth is crammed with Cheetos).

Pull on some comfy gear and get outside.

Take a walk around the block. Once you’ve mastered that, walk around the block twice. Then, surprise yourself – walk one, jog one.

Keep adding a little more activity each day. Maybe it’s dancing. Maybe it’s jumping jacks every time a commercial comes on the TV. Could be a bike ride. Or a vigorous 30-minute lawn-maintenance session. Whatever. Just start moving. And then keep it up.

You might not be running Bloomsday start to finish in 49 days, but you might be able to run an entire mile without stopping, or maybe even three. You could be fitting into a smaller pair of pants!

49 days is seven weeks. (Exercise is a great brain-power booster, too!)

Seven weeks could lead to the beginning of your healthier, happier, energetic-er life!
