It’s Craven, so I wanna ‘Scream’

In a book group that I’ve been a part of for the past several years, the term post-modern comes up on occasion. As in … huh? But the other members seem far smarter than I – or at least they fake it better. They act like they know what it means.
I, though, had to look it up. I checked here. And here .
Whatever. The term comes up because of “Scream 4,” which is as close to a post-modern exercise in movie horror as you’re apt to find. Maybe a bit too obviously post-modern, as it turns out.
Not one moment of this movie advances the story line beyond what director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson came up with for “Scream 2,” which deconstructs the whole slasher genre better than a Harvard humanities professor going up for tenure.
Oh, sure, clever. At moments. But, really, how many times can you make the same movie? Oh, right. Craven has made a career out of making and remaking movies (“A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “The Hills Have Eyes,” “The Last House on the Left”). Clever career move, Wes.
Whatever. I’m more interested in watching my new favorite show, “Archer.” It’s on FX. Now, that’s a post-modern piece of art worth pondering.
Ironic, right?
Below : My new favorite show, “Archer.”
