Norman’ features Spokane as a backdrop
The other day, when I was at the AMC and saw “The Ides of March” — easily the most cynical film I’ve seen this year — I saw a trailer for a little film titled “Norman.” And, wow, didn’t that look like Spokane in the background?
Turns out it is. “Norman,” which opens Oct. 21 at AMC, was directed by Jonathan Segal. It stars Dan Byrd as Norman Long, a disaffected teenager who, it turns out, pretends to be dying of cancer. Meanwhile, he attracts the attention of a classmate (Emily VanCamp) and his father (Richard Jenkins) really is facing a terminal illness.
According to a press release, “Norman” has won a number of awards, though the only one I could confirm was Best Actress for VanCamp at the San Diego Film Festival. But it looks to be a decent production, made locally by North By Northwest Productions.
