And the Oscar goes to … ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’?
So, the Academy Award nominations are out. And already people are griping, which is normal in the Oscar universe. What would Hollywood be without a bit of self-promotional controversy?
Here are some of the surprises:
— Eleven nominations for “Hugo” ? Look, I’m a Martin Scorsese fan, but this film didn’t even make my Top 10 list. I know that some people looooove it. Good for you. And, yes, the film had is deserving in most if not all of the technical categories. But, really, Best Picture? Seriously?
— No David Fincher for Best Director? Fincher did far more than simply remake ” The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” He reinterpreted it, creating a cool look and stylistic feel that augmented what Stieg Larsson put on the page. And while, yes, Fincher’s adaptation … just … ended … it included at least one important subplot that the original Swedish trilogy simply ignored.
— Nine films nominated for Best Picture? Last couple of years that number was 10, far too forgiving of an industry that doesn’t reward art near as much as it does commerce. Five was a better number. But because of a new voting procedure , we end up this year with … nine? Just on the face of it, that makes whatever films that didn’t earn a nomination look particularly bad. What, there weren’t enough good films even to fill out a field of 10? (No, don’t get me started.)
— No Michael Fassbender for “Shame”? Pure jealousy that, perpetrated by Academy men with small (censored).
— No Shailene Woodley for Best Supporting Actress? Her scenes with George Clooney were what gave “The Descendants” a special sense. That such a young actress could hold her own with Dr. Heartthrob was pleasing to see and far more deserving than the ham-handed performances in “The Help.”
— “Kung Fu Panda 2” but no “The Adventures of TinTin”? This is so silly I can’t find anything actually to say.
In fact, that’s a good place to stop. It’s Hollywood. I could go on all day. But what would be the point when you could watch an attractive young woman list some other notable Oscar oversights.
