Patriotism appreciated

As I read the guest article of May 25 by Josh Knigge titled, “You are not alone, soldiers,” I was grateful for the touching tribute to those who serve our nation in battle. Then, when I read that he was a senior in high school, I was especially proud of one still young who recognized the courage and sacrifice made by others to provide him a brighter future.

Josh wrote the things I felt in my heart about my love of country, gratitude for our freedoms and for those who daily put themselves in harm’s way or offer the ultimate price on our behalf.

It is not just the soldiers who sacrifice. Our gratitude must extend to their families who support these good men and women. It cannot be easy. My father served in the U.S. Navy, and he regularly taught me, by word and deed, of patriotism.

My husband and I adopted two orphaned baby girls from China. I teach them to appreciate their heritage, but also ensure they understand the gift of being an American citizen. When my 5-year-old recites to me the Pledge of Allegiance, my heart swells. We are Americans. God bless this great country.
