Today’s “P,T&A” post

Remember when Steve Martin’s character dismisses John Candy’s character on the plane early on by saying he wants to read a magazine article written by a friend of his? Sure. Well, we come to learn that Martin’s character is quite well off. So how would he happen to have a friend who writes for a magazine, a gig that while fairly cool sounding would not have paid a hell of a lot — at least not anything like what Martin’s character apparently makes? I’m asking.

Under what circumstances would that purported friendship be plausible? Here are some possibilities. I invite you to choose.

A) Frat brothers. B) Martin’s character knows the writer from his days when they both worked at the Chicago Tribune. C) The “article” in question is actually a guest commentary in a business publication written by a partner at a big advertising agency. D) The writer has a spouse with a significant income and thus travels in the same social circles as Martin’s character. E) The writer is dating the younger sister of Martin’s character. F) They go to the same Episcopal church. G) Martin’s character is essentially lying. He met the writer once on a golf course but they are hardly friends. H) They sat next to each other once at a Blackhawks game. I) Other.
