A seemingly innocuous piece that caused a minor fecal storm

I did not intend the piece linked to below to be insulting. Far from it.

But on the morning it ran, there were angry phone calls, threats of subscription cancellations, the SR editor returning fire by saying he was going to tear up his REI membership card and me telling one particular pain-in-the-ass caller exactly how much I valued his opinion.
