Recycling Holy Names uniforms
The Slice had asked what readers dropped in a deep part of a lake this summer.
Peggy Coffey sent an answer.
“It wasn’t this summer. In fact, it wasn’t this century. But my classmates from Holy Names Academy, class of 1954, had a reunion some years ago. At the Academy, we wore a navy blue serge uniform with a white collar and long sleeves. We were all pretty sick of that uniform after wearing it for four years.
“At the reunion, we were talking about what we did with our uniforms when we graduated. Elaine Bauer and Janet DeNeff went swimming in Liberty Lake wearing their uniforms and then dropped them into the lake, where, as far as I know, they remain till this day.
“I sent mine to the African missions — though what those African girls would think of a serge uniform, I have no idea.
“Joann Alexander sent hers to her cousin in Germany. This was only nine years after the end of the war, and things were still pretty grim in Germany. Anyway, her cousin got married wearing that uniform that we hated so much, and she sent Joann a picture. Apparently she thought it was pretty nice.”
