That’s not just click-bait. I have given some thought to the question of whether I can tell this story. And I decided to go for it.

Seeing that the Eagles are coming here again got me thinking about just how long that group has been around in one form or another.

Since I was in high school, that’s how long. I know that because I remember a specific conversation at a party when I was a senior.

The gathering was at Ann Wick’s house. Her father was a banker who ran for governor of Vermont. He did not win.

Anyway, I was outside Ann’s house talking to a friend named Jim. Maybe somebody had a car radio on, because the subject of an Eagles song came up.

The song was “Take It Easy,” and Jim was amazed that radio stations had the nerve to play it. You see, he had misheard the line “I’m looking for a lover who won’t blow my cover.”

He thought they were singing “…won’t blow my rubber.”

You’d have to agree, that’s a lyric of an altogether different tone.

I don’t know if it was me, but someone set him straight.

And looking back, the funny thing is Jim had a pretty sophisticated sense of hearing. I didn’t know that then. But he wound up being in charge of sound on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

His name was in the credits.

Maybe I’ve told this story before. Oh, well. If you happen to recall that I have, don’t blow my cover.
