Then vs. Now

In the annals of young men trying to cultivate the interest of young women, my friend Rob’s approach had to qualify as one of the more unusual.

When having breakfast at a Tucson restaurant, he would approach attractive young ladies with a copy of the newspaper in hand. And he would point out a story he had written.

(To be fair, he might have overhead something that, in his mind, gave him an opening. And he might have done this only a time or two.)

In any case, I guess this was supposed to inspire the young woman to be receptive to Rob’s subsequent overtures. I don’t think it ever worked out that way.

So anyway, here’s my question.

That was more than 30 years ago. If someone at a newspaper tried that approach today, what would be the reaction?

A) “You write for a newspaper? What’s a newspaper?” B) “I think I’ll phone your editor and report that you are hitting on me.” C) “Would you like to go somewhere and have sex?” D) “I think you misunderstand the concept of social media.” E) Other.
