Pumpkins on porches

I was riding my bike home from work yesterday afternoon when I noticed something.

Pumpkins. Pumpkins on porches.

It wasn’t every house, certainly. But it seemed like there was at least one or two gourd clusters on each block.

Is this a new thing? Or have people been doing this forever?

My memory isn’t what it used to be.

The pumpkins had not been carved into jack-o’-lanterns, of course. They would be Salvador Dali melting clocks by Halloween, if they had.

So maybe it’s just a celebration of fall. I’m all for that.

I wonder if someplace calls itself “The Pumpkin City.”

That would be a pretty good nickname. Though it does have earworm potential, for fans of the girl with ruby slippers her little dog too.

“As mayor of the Pumpkin City…”
