Aug. 14, 1865

That’s the date in the 1948 movie “Red River” when the big Texas cattle herd finally arrives at the railroad in Abilene, Kansas, after an eventful journey that started down near the Rio Grande.

I don’t suppose that exact date has any actual historical significance. It’s a movie, after all. But maybe it’s still a good day for finishing projects. Or a cold one after mowing the lawn.

Good luck.

I’ll leave you today with a trivia question.

What towering figure of the 20th century grew up in Abilene, Kansas?
